American Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected the 267th pontiff and chose the name Leo XIV. The Chicago, Illinois, native became the first American Pope. Shortly after the white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV, clad in his papal vestments, stepped out onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and greeted the world.
